Nafas
The Invisible Dog Art Center

Brooklyn, New York
September 10 – October 15, 2022

Curated by Lucien Zayan

Nafas brought together a dynamic group of artists whose practices engage with food—not only as a material or motif, but as a metaphor for culture, politics, memory, and care. In Arabic, "nafas" means breath or spirit, but in the context of cooking, it also denotes the ineffable quality that elevates food from good to exceptional.

The exhibition featured painting, sculpture, installation, photography, performance, and culinary experiences. Our contribution connected to our ongoing interest in how shared rituals—like making and sharing meals—mirror our collaborative artistic process. Food, like art, can be a site of transformation, labor, healing, and joy.

Nafas was also an extension of the Invisible Dog’s deepening engagement with food as art, especially through SAM (la Salle À Manger), an intimate dining space initiated by Lucien Zayan in 2018. The show emphasized how artists, much like chefs, channel their own "nafas" into their work—an alchemical spirit that transforms material into meaning.

Being part of Nafas, a 2022 Armory Show VIP Program exhibition, allowed us to explore these themes in the company of an extraordinary lineup of artists and performers. The gallery became a table, the meals became artworks, and the audience brought their breath, their presence—their own nafas—to complete the experience.
