Commission Overview
Commissioned by the Museum of Science, Boston, Journey represents Massachusetts’ contribution to America’s Cultural Project, part of the National Scrollathon initiative uniting people through artmaking and storytelling. On May 3, 2025, 103 participants gathered at the Museum of Science to create individual scrolls symbolizing their personal stories. Then they made another scroll which were assembled into a Collaborative Masterwork, Portrait Mural, and Signature Plate, each reflecting the collective voice of the Massachusetts community.

Artistic Approach
Participants crafted scrolls from fabric trimmings in tones of orange, red, and yellow that were scrolled around a wooden dowel that was customized with ink to represent them. The final artwork, Journey, brings together those community scrolls and combines them with smaller scrolls made by our parents. Back at the airbnb they were assembled together into the finished composition.

Engagement and Impact
The Massachusetts Scrollathon engaged 103 participants representing a broad cross-section of Boston’s community, including local cultural organizations, youth programs, and advocacy groups. The project fostered connection, creativity, and reflection, echoing the museum’s mission to inspire curiosity and collaboration across disciplines and generations.

Context and Legacy
Journey is part of the National Scrollathon, a monumental, five-year initiative uniting all 50 states, Washington, D.C., and five U.S. territories through art and storytelling. Each Collaborative Masterwork serves as a visual record of shared creativity and community pride. The Massachusetts project will join the national exhibition at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in 2026, celebrating the 250th anniversary of the United States.
