Commission Overview
Commissioned by Museo de las Américas, Discipline was created as Colorado’s contribution to America’s Cultural Project, part of the nationwide Scrollathon initiative bringing people together through artmaking and community storytelling. On April 7, 2025, 107 participants from across Colorado came together to create scroll-based artworks that explored personal narratives. The collective effort culminated in the unveiling of Discipline, a Collaborative Masterwork installed at Museo de las Américas, accompanied by a Portrait Mural and Signature Plate.

Artistic Approach
Each participant rolled and pinned fabric textiles around a central wooden dowel. Then they customized that dowel with pencils and markers. We asked them to make their “mark” on the dowel to represent them in the finished artwork. The resulting composition radiates with a sense of structure and energy—embodying the title of “discipline” as both an artistic process and a metaphor for dedication, growth, and self-mastery.

Engagement and Impact
The National Scrollathon in Colorado united a vibrant mix of artists, students, community members, and cultural partners, including Arvada Center for the Arts and Humanities, Jefferson County Public Library, Rocky Mountain Public Media, and Museo de las Américas’ staff and volunteers. The project emphasized collaboration and interconnection, aligning with Museo de las Américas’ mission to celebrate Latino culture and creativity.

Context and Legacy
The Colorado Scrollathon forms part of the National Scrollathon, a nationwide initiative connecting all 50 states, Washington, D.C., and five U.S. territories. Each Collaborative Masterwork, including Discipline, contributes to a unified body of art that will culminate in 2026 with a major exhibition at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, commemorating the nation’s 250th anniversary.
