Hunt & Chase was a thematic group exhibition that explored ideas of pursuit—of animals, people, ideas, and desires—curated by Beth Rudin DeWoody and James Salomon. We were honored to be part of this deeply personal and humor-filled exhibition, and it came just after one of our annual family hunting trips to our uncle’s cabin in Virginia.

Our contribution was a piece called Bunny Down, inspired by a hilarious and memorable moment during one of those hunting trips. We were deep in the woods with walkie-talkies, everyone on alert for a bear sighting during bear season. Suddenly, we heard a gunshot—followed by silence. Then, crackling over the walkie-talkie, our brother Matt calmly announced, “Bunny down.” He hadn’t hit a bear, just scared a rabbit. We laughed so hard we cried.

The artwork we made for this show was a small-scale landscape featuring a delicate beaded tree and a little deer stand. Below it, a small bunny figure rests—an homage to that moment and to the absurdity, tenderness, and storytelling that come from time spent with family. The piece was part of our ongoing exploration of memory and play, and fit perfectly within the themes of the show.

Bunny Down was also included the following year in Something About A Tree at the FLAG Art Foundation, highlighting its poetic ties to both nature and narrative.
