Commission Overview
Commissioned by the Jule Collins Smith Museum of Fine Art at Auburn University, Made for More marks the inaugural presentation of the National Scrollathon in Alabama, celebrating the state’s contribution to America’s Cultural Project and the 250th anniversary of the United States. From March 11–15, 2024, over 450 participants from across Alabama created personal scrolls and contributed to a Collaborative Masterwork, unveiled alongside a Portrait Mural and Signature Plates bearing each participant’s name.
Artistic Approach
Made for More was created through a weeklong series of workshops where hundreds of participants formed scrolls from textiles scrolled around a wooden dowel upon which each participant made their mark. The scrolls were joined into a monumental composition in painted-wood-frames. The title reflects the collective spirit of Alabama’s participants, inspired by the idea that creativity, compassion, and community are boundless.
Engagement and Impact
The Scrollathon at Auburn brought together students, seniors, university faculty, and community members from across the state. Partners included the Auburn University Gymnastics Team, the Boys and Girls Club of East Alabama, the Poarch Band of Creek Indians’ BraveHeart Center for Place and Purpose, and numerous educational and cultural organizations. Each group contributed unique perspectives, reinforcing the project’s belief that creativity belongs to everyone.
Context and Legacy
As the first National Scrollathon site of 2024, Alabama set the tone for the national initiative’s rollout across all 50 states, Washington, D.C., five U.S. territories, and Native Community Regional Centers. Made for More represents Alabama’s enduring commitment to the power of art as a force for unity and storytelling. The artwork will join its counterparts in the National Scrollathon Exhibition at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in 2026.
